Experience a new facade of campus life at NIFT Kolkata!

Abhirup-Biswas-1Careers360: Describe your life at NIFT in few sentences.

Nandita: Life at NIFT Kolkata is an adventure. Every day brings fresh learning experiences and opportunities. The work can get pretty intense but ultimately it’s very satisfying.

Careers360: How do you divide your weekly time between your studies and other activities?

Nandita: I incorporate activities into my learning process because our way of studying is so unconventional. I enjoy reading a variety of books and watching TV shows and movies across genres. I also go all around the city which is full of vibrancy and culture, and I draw inspiration from everything I see. I’m also able to relate the things that I learn in college with what I see in the environment I find myself in.

Careers360: How do you get to know about the latest happenings in the institute? Is there any in-house magazine or something else for that?

Nandita: Ours is a very small institute, and our student population is quite closely knit. We are all fairly familiar with each other, and so word of mouth is enough to spread news about the latest happenings.

Abhirup-Biswas-2Careers360: Which are the various clubs and societies there? Are you part of any? Do you think they are beneficial for the students?

Nandita: We have a Cultural Club, Literary Club, Social Club and Sports Club. I participate in activities of the Literary Club most often, though I do take interest in the activities of all the other clubs as well. These clubs are very beneficial for students because they give them an outlet to express themselves outside their creative assignments. Clubs are also a great way to get to know more people and foster a sense of team spirit.

Careers360: Are there regular events that take place in your campus? How is the participation of students on such occasions?

Nandita: There are several events that take place in our campus related to curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities. Students’ ultimate participation depends on their interest in the activities which can vary depending on timings because mid terms and end terms are peak assignment times.

Careers360: What are the best hangout spots at NIFT Kolkata? What, according to you, are the most-visited places nearby the campus?

Nandita: The Nescafé booth and it’s surrounding area is probably where the students gravitate to the most. The reception area is also a popular informal spot, and of course the field is where most of the students flock when the weather permits. NIFT Kolkata students are really lucky because we have a whole bunch of places to eat or spend some time right next to the campus. The lane outside the campus has several food stalls for different types of quick bites. Mani Square and City Centre 1 are two major malls that are just 5-10 minutes from the campus.

Ishan-SinghCareers360: What is your opinion about the infrastructure of the institution? How are faculty members, laboratories, mess, and everything else?

Nandita: Our campus has a satisfactory infrastructure. We have all the tools and machinery we require, and the campus buildings are fair as well. Of course, there is room for improvement. There is a definite disparity between NIFT centres, but we’re pretty well-outfitted and appreciative of the resources that we have. Our centre is quite reputed and sought-after because of our faculty. The teachers are probably the best resource that our college provides us with. Our faculty members are well-versed in their subjects and never hesitate to share knowledge even across departments.

The labs are well-equipped and maintained, we also have highly trained lab technicians and assistants, who help the students. The mess is alright; the food is simple and quite reasonable. Although the temptation to go right outside and pick something more savoury and exotic is always dominant. Overall, it’s a great campus.

Ishan-Singh-2Careers360: How do you like to spend your leisure time? What are the most prominent activities in your campus?

Nandita: I prefer to spend my leisure time with my friends or by myself in peace and quiet. NIFT life is extremely hectic and most people tend to underestimate that. Sports is the most prominent activity on campus. The clubs are active but they don’t manage to get together more than once a week.

Careers360: What other fun activities make your campus unique and interesting?

Nandita: To be honest it’s the people that make NIFT Kolkata what it is; students, faculty and staff alike. Without them it’s an empty shell. As a location, Kolkata is amazing for creative minds because of its rich history and long-standing relationship with arts. Here, we also have easy access to amazing weavers and artisans for embroidery and handicrafts.

Sreetama-ChoudhuryCareers360: Do you have any Facebook page of your campus where the students express their views, jokes or ideas, or maybe even a blog where they write about their experience of life at campus?

Nandita: Not that I know of. We have several up and coming personal and fashion bloggers but none who are specifically geared towards campus life.

Careers360: Are their any ramp shows that are managed and conducted by the students?

Nandita: Of course, that’s our thing and we dominate in this field. The highlight of the main cultural festival of NIFT, Spectrum, is a fashion show which is entirely conducted and managed by us under the guidance of faculty advisors. We do compete in a lot of fests at other major institutes, and win most often than not.
