My NID score was 53.6 what can I do with it ? Where can I apply now ?

Nancy Johri 29th May, 2018

Hi Riya,

NID has yet not announced the category-wise cutoff scores for B.Des. admissions. It will release the final merit list on May 31, and as many as 100 seats will be allocated to the qualifying candidates.

The score of NID DAT is not accepted anywhere else. So, first let's see whether you have qualified or not. Last year, the cutoff score was 60.05 for Open category.

For more details regarding the same, you can read this article- https://design.careers360.com/articles/nid-dat-cutoff

Siimran Pal 24th May, 2018

Hello Jishnu,
I would like to say that I am happy you came to Careers360, I hope to solve all your queries with this in-depth answer.

All about NID
National Institute of Design (NID) offers admissions to aspirants in Bachelor of Design (BDes), Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) as well as Master of Design (MDes) programmes on the basis of their performance in NID Design Aptitude Test. In order to secure admission in design programmes offered at National Institute of Design (NID) aspirants need to take part in NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). Only candidates who are shortlisted in NID DAT (Prelims) can appear for NID DAT (Mains) admission round.

NID offers Bachelor of Design (BDes) course at NID Ahmedabad as well asGraduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) course at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra. The GDPD course is of four year duration. Candidates can view below NID Entrance Exam 2018 eligibility criteria for BDes & GDPD course admissions.

The eligibility criteria for NID entrance exam for BDes/GDPD course admissions states that candidates who have cleared or who will be appearing for their higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examination from any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, etc.) from any recognised board such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent in the year 2017-2018 can apply for the exam.

Qualifying exams that are accepted by National Institute of Design are as mentioned below:

  • Final examination of the 10+2 system under a central or state board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org).
  • Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination under a board or university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org).
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Senior secondary school examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any public school, board or university examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org).
  • H.S.C. vocational examination.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka.
  • High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  • AICTE approved three-year Full time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories as mentioned on http://www.aicte-india.org/statisticbote.php.
  • Candidates who have completed final examinations for class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.

For the 2018 NID DAT (Prelims) BDes exam paper, the overall structure in terms of marks did not change from the last year, It was, objective type - MCQs for 70 marks and subjective type - Drawing Questions for 30 marks totalling to a 100 marks. Overall, the objective section seemed to be more straightforward except for a few questions compared to the subjective section. It demanded a combination of creative thinking and problem solving abilities.

NID DAT Prelims 2018 exam paper for MDes was divided into two halves- objective and subjective. The objective section had 59 questions in total. These were further divided into different sections with marks per question ranging from 0.5 to 3. The subjective part had 3 questions which tested the creativity and the sketching abilities of students. The overall distribution of marks remained the same- 70 for objective and 30 for drawing totalling to 100 marks.

Overall, it was a mix of emotions with the paper weighing between moderately okay to difficult. On a comparative note, the subjective section seemed to be a little easier compared to the objective part and the 2018 edition of the DAT prelims seemed to be a little difficult for the students as compared to the 2017 edition.
