In this special magazine feature, we sit down with Dr. Himanshu Sharma, Director – Marketing & Outreach, to explore UID’s mission, evolution, world-class facilities, industry collaborations, and placement achievements.

“UID was founded with a purpose—to build one of India’s most future-ready design institutes.”

Dr. Himanshu Sharma on the institute’s beginnings, vision, and mission

Dr. Sharma reflects on UID’s journey with deep conviction. Established with a vision to create a dynamic and globally recognized design ecosystem, UID emphasizes developing designers who possess creative agility and strategic foresight.

“Our mission is to nurture world-class design professionals,” he explains. “We want them to not only master the craft but also evolve as critical thinkers and innovators who drive meaningful change.”

Admissions: A Creative Filter for Creative Minds

Dr. Sharma describes UID’s admission process as a carefully crafted mechanism to identify originality and aptitude. It involves:

  • Tier-IUID Design Aptitude Test (DAT)

  • Tier –II Situation Test and Portfolio Evaluation (ST-PE)

This multi-step evaluation ensures that only passionate, talented, and motivated young designers enter UID’s ecosystem.

Designing Spaces that Inspire: UID’s Industry-Leading Infrastructure

Under Dr. Sharma’s leadership in outreach and visibility, UID’s infrastructure has become a major differentiator for the institute—often compared with top international design schools.

Students enjoy access to:

  • Advanced design studios inspired by global aesthetics

  • Fully equipped AI Arena, Makers Arena, wood, ceramic, metal, and 3D prototyping labs

  • High-end computer labs with the latest Softwares

  • Professional photography and Visual Production Lab

  • A curated materials library showcasing global design samples

  • A vibrant central library with extensive digital and physical resources

“Great design comes from great environments,” Dr. Sharma notes. “Our campus is built to spark imagination.”

Strengthening Industry–Academia Partnerships

“Students must remain closely connected to the realities of the design world.” — Dr. Sharma

Industry engagement remains one of UID’s most powerful pillars. The institute regularly conducts:

  • Masterclasses with global designers and brand leaders

  • Live projects in collaboration with companies

  • Annual conclaves, design weeks, and exhibitions

  • Advisory interactions with industry experts

  • Brand-specific workshops and mentoring sessions

These interactions allow students to understand real-world challenges long before they enter the workforce.

3-Tier Career Service Department: A Holistic Career Launchpad

At UID, career readiness is treated as a comprehensive journey. The institute’s 3-tier Career Service Department (CSD) focuses on empowering students to excel academically, professionally, and entrepreneurially, ensuring a strong career exit strategy—whether through jobs, start-ups, or higher studies.

Through connections with 1200+ companies, designers, design houses, and start-ups, UID provides 100% internship and placement assistance.

Global exposure is fostered through Unitedworld Wide (UWW) and 30+ international partnerships with top universities and institutes, enabling cross-cultural learning, global mobility, and international career pathways.

Complementing this is the Karnavati Innovation and Incubation Foundation (KIIF), recognized by Start-up India and an implementing body of the Start-up India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS). KIIF supports innovators and entrepreneurs by integrating design, technology, and business principles, helping students turn their ideas into scalable ventures.

Going Global: Collaborations That Broaden Horizons

UID’s international collaborations give students the advantage of global exposure and multicultural learning.

These partnerships support:

  • Student and faculty exchange programs

  • Joint design projects

  • International workshops

  • Global study tours

“Design has no borders,” Dr. Sharma emphasizes. “Our students must understand global trends and practices.”

A Final Word

UID stands as a beacon of creative excellence—shaping designers who are not only technically strong but also globally aware and industry-ready. As Dr. Himanshu Sharma beautifully summarizes:

“Design is the language of the future—and at UID, we empower our students to speak it fluently.”

For aspiring designers, UID is more than a campus.
