Careers360 experts have analysed and curated a list of the best drawing exercises for students preparing for design exams like UCEED, NID and NIFT. Drawing and sketching are two of the most important skills for candidates preparing for design entrance exams, as important design exams like UCEED, NID DAT, and NIFT have been seen to place more weight on creative and design thinking questions over the last few years.
Drawing is a skill that improves significantly with regular practice, and therefore, students are advised to incorporate daily drawing exercises in their study schedule to help them score high and crack the exams. Read the complete article for the best daily drawing exercises recommended by experts to help students prepare effectively for the UCEED 2027, NID 2027 and NIFT 2027 exams.
The following are some important skills and abilities that are examined closely in UCEED, NID DAT, and NIFT and other important design entrance exams. Experts have advised students to go through these and understand in order to excel in exams:
Creative thinking
Creative Thinking is the sensitivity ability a designer should have that helps to analyse any change in the design and then respond accordingly to that change. Daily practice with drawing exercises helps candidates in more detailed understanding of the needs of the users and create better solutions.
Problem Solving
Once you have an in-depth understanding of the problem users are facing, it becomes easier to come up with the solution. Daily drawing exercises help students to develop the ability to generate more and more ideas.
Observation Skills
Analysing and observation skills are the key topics here, where it is important to understand objects in depth, with not just the outer, obvious meaning. The ability to observe every detail is developed by daily practice with drawing exercises.
Design Principles
The principles of design are the rules you must follow to create an effective and attractive design composition. The fundamental principles of design are Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Hierarchy, Movement, Proportion, Repetition, Rhythm, and Pattern. Students can understand and develop skills for design principles through daily drawing and sketching exercises.

Daily drawing exercises will help students improve their hand-eye coordination and increase speed and accuracy. It also develops their understanding for composition and visual understanding. A list of best daily drawing exercises for students aiming for UCEED, NIFT and NID is given below by experts:
Exercise 1: Warm-Up Exercises
Students are advised to start their Practice with basic warm-up exercises as given below to improve their hand control and increase drawing quality and accuracy.
Straight lines
Curved lines
Circles
Squares
Cubes
Cylinders
Cones
Ellipses
Exercise 2: Figure Drawing Exercise
Figure drawing-related questions in design exams are asked to check students’ ability to draw human figures accurately and how correctly students focus on proportions. Students are advised to practice with stick figures and action lines first to understand figure compositions. Candidates can start with basic humanand animal anatomy and practice sketching figures in different poses. Take references from images or live figures to improve accuracy.
Exercise 3: Freehand Drawing Exercise
Design entrance exams like UCEED, NID, and NIFT generally do not allow students to use rulers or any other drawing tools; therefore, drawing without the aid of rulers or compasses can be intimidating for students in the exam. To overcome this, students should practice drawing freehand sketches and work on their line and weight control. Use objects like trees, flowers, and clouds to practice creating natural, flowing lines.
Exercise 4: Objects Drawing Exercise
Practice sketching everyday objects from various viewpoints to improve observation skills. Understanding of basic Proportions & Scaling is very important for perspective drawing. With the help of sketching practice for different objects daily, it gets easy for students to develop creativity and imagination skills for product design solutions.
Exercise 5: Concept Drawing Exercise
Drawing a concept or idea, often with the objective of visualising a product, space, or scenes, is asked of students in the design entrance exams like UCEED, NID and NIFT. Practice creating visual representations of abstract ideas and shapes to represent a concept. Start with brainstorming ideas and sketching roughly before refining them into detailed concepts.
Exercise 6: Storyboarding Drawing Exercise
A lot of questions in design exams are where students' ability to visually depict a series of events to evaluate a candidate's ability to convey a narrative, idea, or sequence. Questions are asked to create a storyboard for a simple narrative, such as depicting the steps of an action or event. Students are advised to practice with creating step-wise sketches for basic activities like making tea etc. This will give students a clear idea of how many steps and sketches are needed to show any event and boost confidence for the actual exam.
Exercise 7: Perspective Drawing Exercise
Perspective sketching is imagining how a view is seen and then drawing it out on paper. Perspective drawings are more realistic and appropriate.
According to the vanishing points, the 1/2/3 perspectives of the drawings are termed. Let’s look at examples:
1 point perspective: view of railway tracks meeting at 1 point.
2 point perspective: view of any space through human eye level.
3 point perspective: view from an extremely low or high eye level.
Outstanding Track Record in Placements.
Students initially can use scales to mark vanishing lines and the height of objects just to get a better idea of vanishing points, but it is advisable to start sketching without a scale/ruler to improve their vanishing lines and straighter line strokes. Start with guiding boxes for objects and then create details for objects into the boxes; it will help in better creating heights and widths for objects.
Below are some important tips and strategies that students should follow with daily drawing practice exercises in order to achieve high scores in drawing section of design exams:
Practice sketching ideas quickly to improve visual thinking. Analyze good and bad designs around you.
It is very important for students to first learn how to apply design principles: contrast, alignment, hierarchy, balance etc.
The best way to develop the skills for design aptitude is to start creating solutions using real-life inspirations and case studies. Once you get a hang of how to design practically and innovatively, try to imagine and work on solutions without the help of looking at already existing solutions.
Figure out your strengths and weaknesses and then practice daily to work on the weaknesses and simultaneously work on how better you can use your strengths for any given situation.
Students can go through some UCEED, NID and NIFT previous year question papers, sample papers and mock tests to understand the type of questions asked in the exam.
