Daily sketching practice for design entrance exams like UCEED, NIFT and NID is very crucial for students in order to crack the exams as weightage and focus on creative and sketching skills have been seen to increase over the last few years. Regular sketching practice helps students to improve their skills for observation, visualization, creativity, which is examined in exams like UCEED, NID DAT, and NIFT and also speed and accuracy which is crucial while taking any design entrance exam. This article provides a structured daily sketching routine curated by experts to help UCEED, NID, and NIFT aspirants strengthen their drawing skills and prepare confidently for the exams.
Experts have analyzed previous years' question papers of design entrance exams like UCEED 2027, NID DAT 2027 Exam, and NIFT Exam 2027, and examiners have given more focus and weightage to creative and design thinking questions. A brief analysis for different exams have given below for students to understand:
UCEED 2027: Over the last few years, emphasis has increased from UCEED 2024 (two questions, 100 marks), making strong drawing and creative skills very important for students to prepare for in order to crack the UCEED 2027 exam. As Part- B of the UCEED exam carries a significant weightage in overall result of the exam, preparation for this section is very important for students in order to get admissions.
NID DAT 2027 : It was seen in the NID 2026 question paper that it did not have any Part-A section and questions were only based on creative ability. All the questions were based on drawing and design thinking aptitude.
NIFT 2027: NIFT BDes exam has a separate Creativity Ability Test (CAT) section that carries marks in total of 100 marks. This has been seen consistently with 50% weightage, which is the primary and highest in the final score of the exam, for drawing and sketching questions for NIFT exam.Students must thoroughly go through the NIFT CAT 2027 syllabus to boost their preparation.

For students preparing for design entrance exams like UCEED, NID, and NIFT, there are a number of benefits for daily sketching practices including:
Sketching is a skill that develops and refines through daily practice and repetition and therefore students are advised to practice regularly.
Daily sketching practices also improve observation skills in students. For this students are advised by experts to observe different objects and draw as precisely as they can.
Daily practice for sketching and drawing also helps in increasing drawing speed that helps with time management during the exam.
Practicing sketching and drawing daily strengthens visual memory for students and also helps them to understand different scales proportions and perspectives.
Daily sketching will help students in improving their design thinking abilities and also develop the skills to communicate ideas clearly through sketches.
Experts have created a weekly plan for students to use as a guideline in creating their own sketching plan in order to effectively prepare for the design entrance exams as given below:
Following are some sketching exercises that help students in strengthening their observation skills for the exam. This exercise helps students in product understanding, and visual memory.
Day 1 - Draw your study table from different angles.
Day 2 - Sketch your favourite coffee mug using light and shadow.
Day 3 - Draw a pair of shoes with material renders.
Day 4 - Sketch a plant with details.
Day 5 - Draw your backpack from different angles.
Day 6 - Sketch your hand in five different positions.
Day 7 - Draw your room without using an eraser.
Practice Tips:
Draw from observing real objects instead of pictures to understand the material, proportions and scale of the object.
Sketch the object from different angles to understand the composition.
Focus on proportions before starting with the details.
Perspective and object sketching exercises help students in skills development for spatial awareness, perspective understanding and compositions.
Day 8 - Draw a street corner using a one-point perspective.
Day 9 - Sketch a classroom in two-point perspective.
Day 10 - Draw stacked books from eye level.
Day 11 - Sketch a bicycle.
Day 12 - Draw a staircase.
Day 13 - Sketch a chair from unusual angles.
Day 14 - Create a room using perspective grids.
Practice Tips:
Start with simple shapes like cubes, cuboids, cylinders and cones before sketching proper perspective sketches. This exercise helps students in understanding 3D compositions and scale.
Notice how objects become smaller and smaller as they get farther away.
By understanding perspective scales and proportions first, students will be able to create realistic compositions and improve spatial visualization skills.
Memory sketching exercises help students in visual and imagination skills development that provides them an edge for design entrance exams.
Day 15 - Visit a market and later sketch it from memory.
Day 16 - Draw your classroom without looking at it.
Day 17 - Sketch yesterday's dinner table.
Day 18 - Draw a railway station from memory.

Daily practice for creativity and design thinking exercises will help students to think creatively and develop innovative ideas in given time constraints.
Day 22 - Redesign your school bag.
Day 23 - Design a futuristic bicycle.
Day 24 - Invent a smart water bottle.
Day 25 - Design an eco-friendly classroom.
Day 26 - Create a mascot for your city.
Day 27 - Illustrate "A World Without Plastic."
Day 28 - Design a chair for astronauts.
Day 29 - Combine two animals into a unique creature and explain its purpose.
Day 30 - Create a poster promoting sustainable living.
Practice Tips:
Take any design and creatively think on how it can be changed for a better and more productive futuristic application.
Read different design innovations and technologies to stay up to date with new ideas and innovations in the design industry.

Warm up exercises are as important as the sketching practice itself as they improve hand control, line confidence, and accuracy. Since almost every object can be broken down into basic geometric shapes, mastering these fundamentals makes complex drawings much easier.
Practice for 10-15 minutes daily before sketching practice:
Straight lines
Curved lines
Circles
Ellipses
Squares
Cylinders
Cubes
Practice Tips:
Try not to remove your hand from paper a lot and manage consistent lines and shapes to improve hand control.
Try not to use any eraser while doing warm up exercises.
