The National Institute of Fashion Technology has 20 campuses across India. The NIFT campuses are counted among the top design colleges in India. However, the growing student interest in pursuing courses in design has led to the establishment of several private design colleges, which are popular among students. In this article, let’s try to explore whether NIFT is the only good option.

    NIFT Vs Private Design Colleges

There are 20 NIFT campuses in India. Among them, NIFT Delhi, NIFT Mumbai and NIFT Bengaluru are often the top choice among design aspirants. However, not all campuses are equally preferred, and with limited seats available, students also consider admissions into private colleges.

Admission Process at NIFT and Private Design Colleges

Students have to clear the NIFT entrance exam, which is stage 1 of the NIFT admission process. The subsequent rounds include the NIFT situation test for BDes and interview rounds for NIFT PG programmes.

Almost 18000+ unique student registrations take place for NIFT every year. With only around 5000+ seats on offer, students are compelled to also look at private colleges that accept NIFT scores, as the limited number of seats cannot accommodate all students.

Also, students often prefer top private design colleges over NIFT campuses, which are new or located in smaller cities and offer less exposure.

For admissions into private colleges, students have to appear for the college’s respective entrance exam. Shortlisted candidates in the entrance exam have to appear for a studio test and interview round. Many private design colleges also accept scores in the NIFT entrance exam and other exams like NID DAT and UCEED.

Fees at NIFT and Private Design Colleges

The fee for private design colleges is higher than for NIFT. In the table below, let’s look at the fees at NIFT and some other private colleges.

This ensures all students get equal opportunities without any discrimination based on the campus. The average salary at NIFT placements varies across students from different campuses. On average, students can obtain a package of Rs 5-7 lakh p.a. The NIFT campuses provide a better ROI to candidates.

NIFT Vs Private Design Colleges - Which is Better?

As can be seen from the above discussion, the top private colleges are on an equal footing to some of the preferred NIFT campuses such as NIFT Delhi and NIFT Bengaluru. Private design colleges are a good option for those who may not have the required score to clear the cutoff for admission into top NIFT campuses. Private colleges are also a better alternative for those students who do not want to seek admission into newer or low-ranked NIFT campuses.

Other factors to consider while selecting the private design colleges are the fees, the placements, and facilities, the proximity to one’s hometown and the college study environment.
