Previous Year NIFT Maths Questions

Solving NIFT Maths questions that were asked in previous years is one of the important steps of the study plan. Solving and analysing the NIFT previous year question papers will allow candidates to understand their overall preparation level and also the strong and weak areas. Below are some of the NIFT Maths questions from previous year questions papers.

Q1. A person took a loan of Rs. 10,000 at x% simple interest and after 5 years he pays a total of Rs. 14,250. Then x is?

Options:
A. 6.5
B. 8
C. 7.5
D. 8.5

Correct Option: D. 8.5
Explanation:
Simple Interest = 14,250 - 10,000 = ₹4,250
Use SI = (P × R × T)/100 → 4250 = (10000 × x × 5)/100
Solve: x = (4250 × 100) / (10000 × 5) = 8.5%

Q2. Find the fourth proportional to 6, 9, 20

Options:
A. 40
B. 60
C. 25
D. 30

Correct Option: D. 30
Explanation:
Fourth proportional = (9 × 20)/6 = 180/6 = 30

Q3. The sum of speed with which a motor ship goes with the stream and against the stream of a river is equal to 30 km/h. The speed of the motor ship in stagnant water is?

Options:
A. 12 km/h
B. 18 km/h
C. 30 km/h
D. 15 km/h

Correct Option: D. 15 km/h
Explanation:
Let the speed in still water = x, speed of stream = y
Then, (x + y) + (x - y) = 30 ⇒ 2x = 30 ⇒ x = 15 km/h

Q4. Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6. If 20 is added to each of them, the ratio becomes 7:8. The numbers are

Options:
A. 55, 66
B. 40, 48
C. 50, 60
D. 25, 30

Correct Option: C. 50, 60
Explanation:
Let numbers be 5x and 6x. Then,
(5x + 20)/(6x + 20) = 7/8
Cross-multiplying: 8(5x + 20) = 7(6x + 20)
⇒ 40x + 160 = 42x + 140 ⇒ 2x = 20 ⇒ x = 10
So, numbers = 50 and 60

Q5. A person took a loan of Rs. 10,000 at x% simple interest and after 5 years he pays a total of Rs. 14,250. Then x is?

Options:
A. 6.5
B. 8
C. 7.5
D. 8.5

Correct Option: D. 8.5
(Repeated question — same explanation as Q1)

Q6. Two bottles contain a mixture of milk and water in the ratio of 5:1 and 9:1. What proportion of quantities from the two be mixed together so that the mixture thus formed may contain milk and water in the ratio of 8:1?

Options:
A. 1:8
B. 1:5
C. 5:1
D. 2:5

Correct Option: C. 5:1
Explanation:
Use allegation:
Milk % in 5:1 = (5/6)*100 = 83.33%
Milk % in 9:1 = (9/10)*100 = 90%
Target = 8:1 ⇒ 88.89%
Apply alligation:
(90 - 88.89) : (88.89 - 83.33) ⇒ 1.11 : 5.56 ≈ 1:5 ⇒ Reverse ratio = 5:1

Q7. If twice the age of daughter is added to three times the age of mother, the sum is 120 and if twice the mother’s age is added to three times the daughter’s age, then the sum is 90. The age of mother is?

Options:
A. 30 years
B. 36 years
C. 41 years
D. 42 years

Correct Option: B. 36 years
Explanation:
Let daughter = x, mother = y
2x + 3y = 120 …(1)
3x + 2y = 90 …(2)
Solving: Multiply (1) by 3 and (2) by 2:
6x + 9y = 360
6x + 4y = 180
Subtract: 5y = 180 ⇒ y = 36

Q8. What is the value of A:B:C, if A:B = 2:3 and B:C = 4:5?

Options:
A. 8:12:15
B. 2:3:4
C. 2:3:5
D. 4:6:11

Correct Option: A. 8:12:15
Explanation:
A:B = 2:3
B:C = 4:5
Make B same: LCM of 3 and 4 = 12
⇒ A:B = 8:12, B:C = 12:15
So, A:B:C = 8:12:15

Q9. If the cost price of 24 articles is equal to the selling price of 16 articles, then profit/loss percentage is?

Options:
A. 40% loss
B. 50% profit
C. 45% loss
D. 33.33% profit

Correct Option: B. 50% profit
Explanation:
Let CP of 1 article = ₹1 ⇒ CP of 24 = ₹24
SP of 16 = ₹24 ⇒ SP of 1 = ₹1.5
Profit = 0.5 on CP 1 ⇒ (0.5/1) × 100 = 50%

Q10. x% of y + y% of x is equal to?

Options:
A. 2% of xy
B. 20% of xy
C. 2% of 100 xy
D. 2.5% of xy

Correct Option: A. 2% of xy
Explanation:
x% of y = (x/100) × y
y% of x = (y/100) × x
Sum = (xy + xy)/100 = 2xy/100 = 2% of xy

Emphasize Practice: Achieving proficiency in math requires more than just reading or listening. Actively engage in problem-solving to enhance your skills. The more problems you solve, the better equipped you’ll be. Practice different problem-solving approaches to build versatility.

Learn from Mistakes: When practicing NIFT sample papers or previous year questions, thoroughly analyze your solutions, especially if you make mistakes. Understand the shortcomings in your problem-solving approach. Identifying errors helps strengthen your skills and prevents repeating the same mistakes.

Grasp Key Concepts: Avoid memorizing processes; instead, focus on understanding the underlying logic. Mathematics builds on sequential concepts, so ensure a solid grasp of fundamental principles before tackling more complex problems. Understanding the “why” is crucial for long-term success.

Address Doubts: When stuck on a part of a problem, resist the urge to skip it. Take the time to comprehend the solution process. Once you understand the initial problem, use it as a foundation to progress through the entire question. Math mastery requires time, patience, and a willingness to confront challenges.

Optimise Study Environment: Create a distraction-free study environment for math, a subject demanding high concentration. Background music, chosen carefully for a relaxing atmosphere, can aid focus. Eliminate distractions to enhance your ability to solve complex problems in geometry, algebra, or trigonometry.

Build a Mathematical Dictionary: Compile notes, flashcards, or cheat sheets containing essential math concepts, terminology, and definitions while studying detailed topics from NIFT syllabus. Include meanings, key points, and sample answers for quick reference. This resource will serve as a handy tool for reviewing and reinforcing your understanding.

Hello,

According to the sources, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) entrance exam for 2026 will be held in February 2026. Also, the registration period may open from November 2025.

I hope it will clear your query!!

Hello,
It’s completely understandable to feel disheartened after not getting a seat in the first and second rounds, especially when you’ve filled all the colleges and have your hopes set on a particular course like Fashion Communication . With an OBC rank of 1910 and CMR 7192, your chances can improve in the upcoming counselling rounds as more students withdraw or shift to other colleges.
So make sure to check the further rounds of counselling and don’t lose hope. Many students get seats in the 3rd, 4th, and mop-up rounds. You can also consider updating your preference list or keeping a wider range of courses and campuses open in case you're okay with related fields.
Keep checking the official NIFT website for updates on seat allotment and further counselling instructions.
Thank you
