About NID

National Institute of Design is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ falling under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Govt. Of India. NID DAT Exam Pattern, Studio Test, and Interview

The Design Aptitude Test conducted by the institute for Admission to various M.Des courses consists of two important stages, the prelims and the mains. NID DAT Prelims is a paper/pencil-based test aimed to test the design aptitude of candidates in which concepts like Lettering, Colour Terminology, Optical Illusion, Principles of Design etc will be tested. Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their score in the prelims. NID DAT Mains component consists of Studio Test and Personal Interview. Both will be conducted on the same day. NID Interview Process

The NID interview is conducted face-to-face, immediately after the studio test. It will be conducted only in English. The date, time and place of the NID interview is conveyed to the shortlisted candidates through the NID admit card, well in advance. NID does not arrange travel and accommodation facilities for the shortlisted candidates and the candidates must make their own arrangements.

Question: Please give your introduction.

Answer: According to students who have appeared for an NID interview, the panel generally starts with the basics. Asking the students to tell background information or something interesting about themselves. Answer: For these questions students should not only praise the institution but also provide what they could offer by being a student there. Students should be optimistic about their answers and should state how NID provides a great opportunity to its students in terms of holding a reputation that allows the students to bring changes. Students should find and talk to alumni of the institution for better framing of the answers.

Question: Choosing design as a profession

Most often, students during NID interviews also come across questions like

  • Why do you want to do designing in general?
  • What motivates you to become a designer?
  • If not a designer, what other profession will you choose?

If an aspirant carries a portfolio, model, or drawings to showcase, the panel is highly likely to ask questions regarding the same. Aspirants can expect questions such as

  • What inspired you to make this?
  • What was the part you enjoyed the most in the process of creating the designs/products in your portfolio.
  • How much did it cost?
  • What did you learn from this?
  • Explain the methodology that you used to create this design?

Answer: To prepare an answer for such questions, it is important for the candidate to conduct in-depth research about their designs or models. Candidates must display their critical thinking skills, whilst answering questions related to their portfolio. Portfolio questions are designed to test a student's knowledge about his / her own works. The students must be able to answer these questions without fail else it would raise an issue related to plagiarism.

Question: Design Theory/ Design Thinker related questions

The interview panel also asks candidates to talk about any design related theories or thinkers that the candidate aligns with, according to previously interviewed candidates.

  • Who is your favourite thinker related to the field of design?
  • Why do you admire this thinker/theory?
  • Have you read any book related to the field of design?

Answer: These questions check a student's dedication in the field they chose. The student’s who cannot instantly answer the questions can also say that at the moment they can't come up with names. They may divert the question to their Inspirations to become a designer.

Question: General knowledge and current affairs questions

Further, aspirants preparing for NID interview should keep themselves updated with GK and current affairs. During the interview, candidates are also asked questions that are related to general knowledge and current affairs.

Answer: These questions test a student's general knowledge and current changes in the trends due to global happenings. The answers should reflect a student's understanding of the global issue and its impact on their field of choice.
