For both B.Des. and M.Des. programs, NID holds interviews; acing this round is crucial for securing admission. The interview covers different topics than the NID DAT 2026 syllabus, which many students ignore and cause stress at the last minute. For NID DAT exam candidates, the interview is an important step that offers a special chance to speak with senior teachers, examiners, and industry specialists. Because it is intended to assess your "thought process," it is an essential part of the selection process, particularly for M.Des. candidates in a variety of design fields, including product, graphic, apparel, and ceramic design.

The NID DAT 2026 exam admission process is conducted in two phases: Prelims and Mains. Candidates who clear both stages advance to the interview round.
Interview is a healthy conversation between the Panelist and the candidate to understand the perspective of candidates for the following points as follows:
Understanding the Design-Thought Process and Creative Thinking
Communication Skills of an aspirant, reflecting Passion for design.
Reflection to collect through ideas with real-world challenges.
Sharing the experience and learning from previous works
Uniqueness in the Perspective within area of expertise

The interview is your chance to showcase your creativity, thought process, and design sensibilities beyond the written exam. Below are the steps.
A strong portfolio speaks more about you on your behalf in front of an interview panelist. A strong portfolio should include the following:
1a. Diversity of Projects, highlighting the strengths of an aspirant, such as sketching skills, Software Skill Set, Storytelling and past works, if any, from last Professional experience.
1b. Narrative: It is the art of presenting in a manner that conveys your story and thought process for a given task, situation and process of achieving the outcomes.
Always try to gather as much possible feedback from professionals; this will help you refine your portfolio.
Understanding the Design trends and NID’s expectations from the aspirants is a crucial thing to align with the vision of the institute before appearing for an interview :
2a. Design Trends: It is advised to follow the institutes' blogs, official and subsidiary websites around the institutes' projects in various domains and ongoing research projects on the institutes' website for familiarizing with the NID & CEED exam expectations.
2b. Compile Past Experience: The aspirants applying for the M.Des. Programs have a high probability of being enquired about their professional experience and learning, like
What were your major projects and their scope of work?
What were the challenges faced in the execution of Projects?
How did you manage timelines to match the professional expectations?

Mock Interviews are an excellent way to refine the responses and build confidence towards the most likely asked questions as follows:
Why do you wish to join the NID?
Tell me about your most exciting project.
How will you approach this situation? “As provided spontaneously”..
“Design Is a Collaborative Effort” Elaborates on one such experience of working collaboratively with your team and how you handled the differing opinions.
*It is advised to plan a mock interview with the industry expert of the domain you wish to apply for, for M Des. in particular. However, for B Des. courses, focus more on talking about yourself, your ideas, and your work (e.g., class projects from schools or competitions).
Your uniqueness is your strength, where you have lived a life tackling everyday challenges, making memories, learning and creating your own identity. While talking about yourself and your work, take care of the following points as follows :
Avoid any exaggeration of the achievements, as the panelists are experienced people with prolific backgrounds. Only share genuine experiences and learning in a narrative shaped by storytelling.
Admit Mistakes Openly: There may be situations where panelists might put you in a complex problem to test your mindset, where you are advised to react very positively and admit openly if you are not aware of something asked during the interviews.
The most important trait for a professional is honesty with his/her duties. Most stakeholders are ready to neglect your mistakes if you have the boldness to reflect genuinely.
Cracking any exam to get listed is mostly a matter of being in a state of “calmness”, which triggers better time management and, ultimately, a better output in any effort, especially when we are aiming for something which needs quick reflections, decision making and creativity in a primary response.
Below are the Common Mistakes to be Avoided by the students during the NID 2026 interview.
Overconfidence: While confidence is a healthy and crucial element, an aspirant should always make a clear line between arrogance and overconfidence when discussing the subject. Since there is always something new to learn.
Generic Responses: Communication is a critical skill of the 21st century, where personalizing your experiences and customizing them with a unique perspective is crucial from the interview point of view.
Ignoring Feedback: It has been observed in the past, as experts suggest, that the students would prefer to take the feedback and reflect accordingly; instead, on multiple occasions, aspirants try to prove their point right, which is a big no for any interview.
Streamlined Preparations: Aspirants often need to pay more attention to the need to practice and organize their portfolios or presentations before appearing for the interview. One should be prepared to talk about learning and experiences in a flow without referring to the document to narrate the picture engagingly.
Below is an example for an NID DAT 2026 interview scenario. Students can also refer to NID Interview Questions with Answers for better understanding.
Interviewer: Hello
Candidate: Namaste!
Interviewer: How was your “Studio Test”
Candidate: It was great. Indeed, I enjoyed the “Problem Solution Part.”
Interviewer: Tell Us something about yourself apart from “Resume”
Candidate: The candidate talks about hobbies and how they help him contribute to better projects.
Interviewer: Talk About one of the most exciting projects from your “Portfolio.”
Candidate: Thanks for this opportunity. I would like to discuss the following: “This project addresses the challenge of increasing accessibility in public spaces."
Candidate: Talking about Process, "I began by researching user pain points, ideating solutions, and creating a prototype."
Candidate: Talks about the solution that “Improved the navigation for the visually impaired users, tested it with users, sharing the feedback”...

The NID interview is your chance to present yourself, your creativity, your passion, and your potential as a designer. Therefore, it is possible to step through this stage successfully by performing thoughtful preparation, being willing to be genuine, and using strategies as discussed above. Thus, the interview concerns what you’ve done and who you are as a designer. If you can apply confidence, curiosity, and a passion for design to your work, success will not be far behind.

Hi daksh
As 563 rank in nid dat exam cannot guarantee admission in designing college but it could be a good chance to explore some campus as if you are not from general category as category role plays an important role . But now you can do one thing focus on your strengthening your protofile or preparing for the studio test (bdes) or interview (mdes).
Thanks.
