To perform in NID Mains, one could adhere to a very tried and tested AIR strategy, which works at three levels of strategic approach while attempting the question paper. This may not be a hard applied Rule, but it is a great aid to an aspirant to perform in DAT-Mains Exams.
A - Absorption (Reading in and between the lines for a given problem statement)
I - Interpretation (What exactly is sought to be delivered but very targeted approach)
R- Reflection (How to present the idea to address the given situation in a limited time)
Let us try to understand how the A-I-R Model works at all three levels one by one through a potential question for DAT-Mains as an example.
“You are a teen who every day, while going to school, watch Blind people grapple with fear while crossing a busy Indian Road, with a high risk of accident”, This makes you think of a solution that could offer a safer experience of crossing the Road to Blind People.”
MM. 20 marks
01. First level A- “Absorbtion”
Ideal Time to Read: 1 minute
One must read in and between the lines for the problem statement, ideally scanning for 40-60 seconds the intent of the problem statement and make a self-inquiry for:
1a. Think who the proposer of the solution is.
For this question, a teen who goes to school, so the idea proposed while answering the question should undoubtedly be unique but at the same time, it is feasible from the perspective of a school-going teen should not be ignored.
1b. What is the motivation behind the task?
Since the protagonist crosses the road every day witnessing the challenges of the blind people this creates an impulsion in the subject to come out with something that should fulfil the needs of the visually impaired.
1c. What is the Solution, why not another stick?
When referred to as a solution, it means anything that helps the user, who in this case is a blind person. The user should be benefitted in either way but that should not be another stick as an aid
1d. When thinking about solutions, what should be the offering?
The solution should help the blinds overcome the fear of uncertainty while crossing the roads and develop self-confidence in the user (blind person here in this case).
02. Second Level, I - “Interpretation”
It is an analysis of what exactly is sought to be delivered but in a very targeted approach
At this level, one also needs to anticipate the provided scenario and try to answer the Question Asked at “Absorbtion” level creatively.
Ideal Time to Interpret: 04 min
2a. What to Interpret?
This part of the approach demands creative thinking and being in the point of time for the given context and answering the requirements as per the problem statement.
2b. How to Interpret?
Select 05 keywords from the Problem Statement that you believe are most crucial, Write them on paper and start imagining solutions and contemporary scenarios around it, that could turn out to be potential ideas
2c. Aha.. I got an idea, should I go with it?
Wait! Discard this idea, okay another idea, again discard this too, ideally the third idea, in most cases, holds the true potential to be converted into a solution with a unique offering. The reason for this argument is to overcome the normal, where Most aspirants coming with more or less the same backgrounds tend to react likewise for multiple common factors, and one most crucial factor is the exposure to Social media is a primary source of information in contemporary times. Thus hold your breath and think a little.
2d. Simple is Sweet
Keep your solution as simple as possible since the evaluators during the evaluation process finds the simple solution feasible and easy to implement to the given challenge.
2e. Developing an Ability to be in the shoes of the user
(How a person with little or no vision would react to chaotic surroundings, the pace of walking, the facial expression, the confidence or skepticism of the unknown should teleport you immediately to the landscape)
03. IIIrd Level, R-Art of Reflection
It focuses on communicating your thought process effectively while tackling questions and scenarios presented within a limited time frame. Here, one should be able to communicate the solution from the back of one's mind to paper since it’s your depiction that speaks on your behalf. To reflect, one should be diligent with the following:
3a. Presentation Skills
By presentation skills, we mean good sketching skills that should, Primarily focus on the right proportions and clear communication without making it very detailed to reflect in a given time frame it may jeopardise the time limits assigned to other questions.
3b. Selection of View Angle
What would be the best camera angle or perspective to best reflect by sketching for the problem statement like a close shot, middle shot, or long shot to establish the context of the solution? It is crucially defined by putting the proposed solution and its usage depicted in the sketch.
3c. Strategies
It comprises two main learnings, First, Overcoming the deep desire to make another smart stick (primary idea) Second, one should avoid directly sketching in space in the main answer sheet, despite a rough scribble of the proposed solution is always helpful to organise and strategies your ideas.
3d. Adding a Relevant Caption/Title
Supporting the provided sketch with a relevant title or caption is like a compliment to a nicely dressed lady, where you add meaning and help people relate with your thought process with an orate but equally effective title.
Thus, while the NID-DAT may appear challenging, take this as an opportunity to highlight your distinct voice and design abilities. Don't let anxiety get in the way.
To prepare for NID mains, practice the A-I-R technique as a useful tool rather than a strict guideline. Examine the issue in great detail, apply your imagination, and consider your solution carefully.
It's okay to think creatively even if your first concepts appear simple. Do not hesitate to go beyond and discover that special "Third idea" that makes you unique.
NID studio test preparation involves the assessment of critical thinking ability in design. This includes material handling, story narration, communication through design, clay handling, and many more such exercises. In addition, there is one section called the Audiovisual test which tests students' ability to gauge visual thinking and interpretation of the questions and the problem-solving approach. Overall, the test comprehensively evaluates candidates' readiness for the dynamic challenges of the design field. So here are given few example questions just to make students familiarise which type of questions may come in the exam.
Creative Doodle Challenge:
Design a series of doodles having a theme of “Urban Jungle” in which you have to create 10 boxes with different scenes that include elements like vines, animals, and skyscrapers. Also, it should include a hidden message within the drawing.
Clay Modelling
Materials given: Clay Blade and Water Sponge. Using these materials create a miniature replica of a famous monument or a landmark and add by using a hacksaw blade to give details to the replica. In addition, you can also provide the realistic texture of the monument using water sponge techniques.
Storytelling
Narrate a story that engages multiple senses. Provide a short story or poem and ask participants to illustrate it visually using doodles or paintings, while also incorporating elements like textured surfaces (using clay or textured paper) and background music or sounds to enhance the narrative experience.
Following the NID Studio Test, students will further go for the last round of interviews. The NID Studio test and Interview happen immediately after completion of the NID Mains examination. The interview round is a very crucial process since it is a final decision-making round. The main goal of the interview is to assess your level of design knowledge and interest.
