Color is a phenomenon of light, objects do not inherently possess color, rather they reflect certain wavelengths of light while absorbing others. Our eyes detect the reflected wavelength, and our brains interpret them as the myriad hues we perceive. This is how scientifically we understand the visual world around us.
Colour theory is broadly categorised into two fundamental systems, based on the application in the real world:
RGB Model(Red-Green-Blue, Additive Color Model): The primary colors Red-Green-Blue, in the form of light, get mixed in equal proportion, whereas the outcome produces white light. This model is used in digital displays, televisions and stage lighting etc. Our computer screens generate colors using the additive model of light.
CMYK Model (Cyan-Magenta-yellow and Black): Subtractive Color Model : This model applies to print media where the colors are explored in the form of the pigments like paints and inks. The primary colors CMYK here are mixed in a proportional format to achieve the desired value of the color. In this model when you are mixing paints, essentially you are subtracting the light.

According to the NID 2026 DAT Exam Syllabus, color theory and color wheel are important and scoring topics. The colour wheel is a round diagram that shows how different colours are related. It has primary, secondary, & tertiary colours set out in a clear order. Artists & designers rely on this tool to grasp colour harmonies and make balanced designs. It's a key part of colour theory for visualising how colours work together.
Sir Isaac Newton created the first colour wheel back in 1666. He mapped colours in a circle to highlight the links between primary, secondary, & tertiary hues. Newton's work formed the base for colour theory, showing the visible light spectrum.A color wheel typically has 12 colors. It includes primary, secondary, & tertiary colors.
These simple colors. You can't mix other colors to make them. On the traditional color wheel, the primary colors are red, yellow, & blue.
When you mix two primary colors, you get secondary colors. They are orange, green, & purple.
These results when you mix a primary color with a secondary color that's next to it on the wheel. For example, mixing red & orange gives you red-orange.
Color Theory is not another topic to study, but a practical skill to be honed for best application as per the use case. Let’s discuss with examples/questions for understanding the relevance for NID DAT 2026 exam according to the NID DAT Exam Pattern :
Tackling Questions based on Visual Perception : In NID DAT questions asked often test your ability for understanding of color relationships, harmonies, and psychological effects. This could involve identifying color schemes, analysing the given color language used in the images for predicting the impact on certain color combinations.
Sketching and Drawing Based Questions : Your ability to use the color effectively in your presentation of the ideas and illustrative sketches. This gauges the ability to reflect the depth of mood, and how to use the color to convey specific messages or emotions.
Design Problem Solving : Many design challenges are based on your informed choices for the products, environments and communication through the same. A strong understanding in color theory enables you to justify the decisions and create impactful solutions.
General Awareness and Design Awareness : Questions are often asked directly based on the famous artworks, design movements or cultural association with colors, requiring a broader application based understanding of color’s role in history and society.

To ace the NID DAT 2026 exam, practice for colour theory includes strategic approaches as discussed below :
Activity to Master the Colour Wheel: Create the physical Color wheel using the paints and mixing the same for achieving the desired outcome, without depicting a jump.
Analyse and Observe: Pay attention to the things around and the application of colors in various fields like advertising, products packaging, architecture and nature.
E.g. Why do delivery companies choose certain colors and overall design on delivery bags?
Practice With Purpose: Integrate the color theory in your sketching and ideation process vehicle doing the design exercises, experiment with warm and cool colors exploring in the process how different color combinations create depth or flatness, and use color to emphasize key elements.
Review Past Paper: Analyse how the color theory based questions have been framed in the past and what are the major topics asked in the exams, this will help you give the insights into the types of the questions to expect and the depth of the understanding required for strategic preparations.

Hi daksh
As 563 rank in nid dat exam cannot guarantee admission in designing college but it could be a good chance to explore some campus as if you are not from general category as category role plays an important role . But now you can do one thing focus on your strengthening your protofile or preparing for the studio test (bdes) or interview (mdes).
Thanks.
No, IPU (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) does not accept NID DAT Prelims score for admission to the B.Des (Bachelor of Design) program.
Instead, IPU conducts its own entrance test or may consider CUET (UG) scores for B.Des admissions, depending on the latest admission guidelines. Always refer to the university's official prospectus for the year you're applying to for the final admission criteria.
