NIFT and UCCED are the two most sought-after examinations in the field of design. These entrance exams are conducted to select students for undergraduate programmes in designing. The NIFT exam is conducted once every year by National Testing Agency (NTA) to grant students admission to different design courses in the NIFT campuses in India. The UCEED exam on the other hand is conducted by IIT Bombay once a year to grant admission to various B.Des courses across IITs and other reputed institutions in India. NIFT Vs UCEED: Registration Process

NIFT - The NIFT application form is released early December every year. Candidates can use the official website nift.ac.in. to register themselves. NIFT application form fees is Rs. 3000. However, for SC/ST/PwD the fee is Rs. 1500.

UCEED - The UCEED application form is released tentatively in the first week of October at uceed.iitb.ac.in. The UCEED registration form fee is Rs. 3600. However, there is a concession for female, SC, ST and PWD candidates as they need to pay only Rs. 1800. For late fees the candidate needs to pay Rs. 500 extra for each category.

NIFT vs UCEED: Selection Criteria

In order to get admission in IITs or NIFT, candidates are required to meet the following eligibility criteria laid down by the concerned authorities. The eligibility criteria include conditions and requirements related to minimum qualification, age limit, minimum aggregate marks and more.

NIFT Eligibility Criteria

As per NIFT eligibility criteria, the students must know the following for UG admission:

  • Candidates must have passed the 12th or equivalent examination in any stream science, arts, or commerce. Or the candidate must be appearing for the 12th examination or equivalent in the year of application.

  • The candidate must also be less than 24 years old on August 1 of the year of application.

UCEED Eligibility Criteria

Aspirants seeking admission to BDes course at IITs or other UCEED colleges must know the following eligibility criteria for UCEED set by the conducting authority. UCEED eligibility criteria is as follows:

  • For the candidates appearing for the UCEED exam, they must know the age limit which is 23. The candidate must be under the age of 23 on or after October 1 of the year of application. There is a relaxation of 5 years for SC, ST and PWD candidates

  • The candidates can only appear for the UCEED exam, a maximum of two times and that too in consecutive years.

  • The candidates must have passed all the exams in 12th class or equivalent from a recognised institution.

  • There are some colleges which state that science stream is compulsory. And some colleges which state Maths is compulsory as a subject. Students must check the eligibility criteria of individual colleges before applying to them.

NIFT vs UCEED: Paper Pattern

The NIFT entrance exam has three parts to it. The first two parts are the creative ability test (CAT) and the general ability test (GAT). The NIFT GAT paper is a computer-based test that tests students' general knowledge, English knowledge, current affair knowledge, quantitative ability etc. The NIFT CAT paper is an offline mode exam meant for the candidates to showcase their creativity on pen and paper. However, B.F.Tech aspirants have only the GAT paper. According to the NIFT exam pattern, there is a -0.25 negative marking.

UCEED exam is a three-hour exam consisting of 300 marks. UCEED question paper consists of two parts- Part A and Part B. Further, the UCEED paper A consists of three sections- numerical answer type (NAT), multiple select question (MSQ), multiple choice question (MCQ). The total mark for UCEED part A is 200. As per UCEED exam pattern, Part B consists of two questions of 50 marks each which evaluates the student's sketching and design aptitude. There is negative marking in UCEED.

UCEED vs NIFT: Participating Institutes/Colleges

Many reputed institutes accept the score of UCEED. However the top IITs that participate in the UCEED exam to intake students are IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati. However, it is compulsory for IIITDM Jabalpur to have science stream with physics, chemistry and biology or maths as compulsory subjects. IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee prescribe science stream with mathematics as a compulsory subject.

The nationwide Institute of Fashion Technology offers a nationwide entrance exam called NIFT for admission to its fashion design programmes.

Every course has specific requirements that must be met in order to apply. For NIFT, there is no minimum age requirement, however it is evident that passing the 10+2 exam is a requirement in order to be admitted to any undergraduate programme in fashion design.


You cannot be admitted because you are in class eleven. However, you can apply to NIFT for experience and practice, and if your application is accepted, you can take the entrance exam. If you pass, however, be aware that you will not be able to retain your results for admission.

NIFT 2023 ELIGIBILITY - B.DES admission

1. Aspiring students must have completed a 10+2 board exam from any recognized Central/State Board of Secondary Examination, such as Central Board of Secondary Education/State Board New Delhi, and Council for Indian School of Certificate Examination, New Delhi or,

2. Any Board/Public School/University Examination conducted in India or abroad which is equivalent to the 10+2 system and is accorded by the Association of Indian Universities or,

3. If candidates complete the General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Sri Lanka/ Cambridge/) at the Advanced (A) level/International Baccalaureate (IB) then, they are eligible to apply or,

4. Students will also be eligible if they have passed the 10+2 examination conducted by the National Open School with at least five subjects or,

5. Diploma of 3 or 4 years which is recognized by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education.

Age limit - Candidates must be of 23 years of age as of August 1, 2022. However, candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Person With Disability (PHP) get a relaxation of 5 years

For BVoc courses in interior design, separate entrance exams are conducted by the concerned colleges. By giving NIFT you can only get admission in BDes and MDes courses in NIFTs and some other participating institutes.

In 2022 NIFT Entrance Examination was conducted in 32 cities. The candidates have to select the preference of the examination cities while filling the application form. Based on the availability, preferences of the examination cities you will be allotted an examination center. You have to appear for NIFT Entrance Examination in the allotted examination center as per the given schedule. You can select any city where examination is conducted while filling your preferences, make sure that you select the cities such that you can commute on the day of examination easily. Next year the list of examination cities may increase or decrease, the cities may vary.
