Given below are some of the top mistakes that students should avoid during the NIFT 2025 Situation Test.
One of the common time management errors during implementation phases is poor pacing of idea working time and detail capturing. Time management is essential to model execution, and participants must strive to complete the model in the 2-hour time limit. It is helpful to spend 10 -15 minutes beforehand to sketch out and build a model. It is ideal to prioritize finishing the structure before the model’s intricacies so that you can do the finer details. Pace yourself and be aware of how much time is left so that you do not panic as time runs out. Following these practices will create an ideal model that is finished with detail.

A poorly constructed model with uneven edges, visible glue marks, or untidy finishing can negatively impact your score. Neatness is one of the key evaluation criteria in the NIFT Situation Test. To avoid this mistake, make sure to cut materials precisely using a cutter or sharp scissors instead of tearing them by hand. Use glue sparingly to prevent excess marks and ensure proper drying before assembling different parts. Maintaining a neat workspace will also prevent you from having a cluttered model. A neat and refined model not only looks good but also showcases your attention to detail.
It takes more than a well-built model if it does not have a solid concept. Candidates tend to concentrate on the physical aspect alone and forget the concept or idea that their model should represent. This leads to a lackluster or bland model. To prevent this, always spend time reading through the theme and coming up with a genuine and creative idea before initiating execution. Your model should have a story or a purpose behind it. Making a rough outline prior to construction can assist in visualizing the end product. Make sure your model is in accordance with the provided prompt and depicts originality.
Using materials without a clear strategy often leads to unnecessary wastage or inefficient model construction. Some candidates overuse materials, making the model bulky, while others use them minimally, leading to a fragile or incomplete structure. Examiners evaluate how well you can creatively use the provided materials, so practice handling common materials like thermocol, wire, mount board, and paper efficiently. Think of multiple ways to use each material and ensure that every element in your model serves a purpose. Avoid excessive material wastage, as sustainable and thoughtful material use is a plus point in the evaluation.
Many candidates overlook the importance of the accompanying write-up, which is a critical part of the evaluation. The write-up explains the concept, functionality, and thought process behind the model. A weak or vague explanation can fail to convey the creativity behind your work. To avoid this mistake, structure your write-up clearly by covering three key points: the concept and theme, the design and structure, and the material selection and execution. Keep it concise yet descriptive, ensuring that it justifies your model effectively. A strong write-up can significantly enhance the impact of your model.
Trying to create an overly complex design within a limited timeframe can backfire if the execution is not neat and complete. Many candidates attempt intricate designs that take too long to construct, leaving them with an incomplete or poorly finished model. Simplicity with innovation is the key to scoring well. Focus on a well-structured and aesthetically appealing design rather than an overly ambitious one that lacks clarity. Make sure your model is practical, proportional, and feasible within the given materials and time constraints.
Unexpected challenges, such as running out of a material or a model component not working as planned, are common in the Situation Test. Many candidates panic and struggle to modify their approach, leading to rushed or incomplete models. To avoid this, practice adapting to changes by working with limited materials and thinking of alternative solutions. Stay calm, analyze the situation, and creatively modify your design if needed. Examiners value problem-solving skills, so demonstrating adaptability can work in your favor.
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is not practicing enough before the test. The NIFT Situation Test is not just about creativity but also speed, execution, and resourcefulness. Without adequate practice, even creative candidates may struggle with time management, material handling, and presentation. Regularly practice creating miniature models using basic materials, solve previous years’ questions, and time yourself during practice sessions. The more you practice, the more confident and efficient you will become in the final test.
Avoiding these common mistakes can significantly improve your performance in the NIFT Situation Test. Focus on time management, neatness, conceptual clarity, material efficiency, and adaptability while preparing. Practicing consistently and refining your model-making skills will help you stand out and maximize your score. A well-executed model, supported by a strong concept and write-up, can make all the difference in securing your place at NIFT.
