The question “What is the NIFT situation test?” often arises among aspiring fashion students. The NIFT situation test is a practical examination conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for candidates who have cleared the written entrance exam. This 2-hour test is designed to evaluate a candidate’s creativity, innovation, and material handling skills under a time constraint. The test involves creating a model using a given set of materials within the specified time. It forms a significant part of the selection process for B.Des courses at NIFT and is conducted offline at the designated NIFT Campus. Candidates who successfully clear the written exam (CAT and GAT) of the NIFT Entrance Exam are eligible to appear for this test.
NIFT Situation Test models consist of three tiered processes that require students to draw either a product, Space, or Place. Candidates have to select any one question and complete it within two hours using the provided material. Moreover, candidates also have to do a write-up that explains their 3D model, its technique, its inspiration, title, practicality, and so on.
To get familiar with the questions and pattern of the NIFT situation test, then go through the below questions which were asked in the past year's situation test. Also make note of the important topics for NIFT preparation.
1. Choose any one of the following themes and create a 3D model. Draw inspiration from the character of any book you like. In 100 words, explain the concept and inspiration behind your design:
1. Habitat of the character
2. Children’s park
3. Mask inspired by a character from your favorite book
Solution :
Below is a 3D mask inspired by a character from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The book features many iconic and unique characters, but I chose my favorite—Albus Dumbledore. He stands out for his distinctive personality and appearance. Dumbledore is known for his long, flowing beard and uniquely styled moustache. He wears an elaborate robe and a tall, pointed hat, which are key elements of his iconic look. His spectacles also add a special touch to his character, enhancing his wise and mystical presence.
2. Using the given materials, construct a 3D futuristic model of any one of the following options. In 100 words, describe your model and the key design features:
1. Movie theatre
2. Mall
3. Playground or sports complex
Solution :
This is a 3D model of a futuristic movie theatre, designed with a seating capacity for 24 people and an advanced, immersive screen feature. I used an OHP sheet to create the screen, giving it a unique, curved structure that enhances the viewing experience. The fully curved screen allows each viewer to enjoy the movie from a dynamic perspective—whether they are sitting or lying down—offering a surreal and engaging visual experience. This innovative design makes the theatre feel more realistic and astonishing, truly embodying the essence of a futuristic cinema.
