Careers360. Please describe your journey to date.

Onshi. It was a pleasant journey till now. From the day I chose my career, then getting interested in each design part, taking motivation from my faculties, those hard working sleepless nights are worth it now. All the hard work I did at that time is the result that after college I am constantly working in my field without any gap and got a secured job with good pay.

Careers360. When did you decide to pursue designing as a career?

Onshi. Decorating my home was my interest. Making small DIY items and doing small activities to make my house more beautiful. Playing with colours. With these interests, I decided to choose interior design as my career and now I am happy with my decision.

Careers360. How did you decide on the specialization?

Onshi. Interior design is a professional course. While studying, my interest in this field was getting deeper resulting in specialization. Instead of going for the master's, I opted to have design experience in a practical field to expose myself to challenges. Now I specialize in Commercial design.

Careers360. What were the factors that made you choose your institution/university?

Onshi. There were lots of institutions and universities that had the same course, but I opted for Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies. Two main factors helped me to finalize my institute. First was my relative’s reference and positive feedback about the university environment and second was the design faculty who counselled me. When I visited the department for counselling, I met the faculty and discussed my interests. The way she addressed me was incredibly positive and motivating and I decided to study there. Till now I Am in contact with my faculty members. They always motivate me a lot.

Careers360. What are the key learning points from your college days that have held you in good stead so far?

Onshi. Real learning is what does not make you bored. The knowledge I get about my field is full of interesting points that I am getting success in my career till now. Understanding client requirements, making practical and sustainable designs, and most importantly observation. Observing the site condition and then planning accordingly makes me stay focused in this field.

Careers360. Are there many changes from your college days to the current design scenario? How best would you describe the changes?

Onshi. There are a lot of changes that not only me, but anyone can see in my portfolio. The decision I took to gain knowledge in a practical field had a major impact on upgrading my portfolio till now.

In college, you get to know how to design but in the practical field, you get to know how to execute it without error. From planning things without budget constraints, with fixed requirements to managing sites, and facing regular challenges, designing multiple options to win the project is different. The way I think of designing earlier is now changed to more specific designs as per the requirement.

Careers360. Portfolio is an important aspect for designers, especially at the start of their careers. What is your advice to them in this regard?

Onshi. In our field, portfolio matters a lot. In my office, earlier we only used 2D layouts for explaining the design to clients but after I joined this office, we started 3D designing which led to winning projects up to 30%. Design portfolios themselves express the knowledge and skills of the designer.

Careers360. Technology now plays an important role in every career. What according to you should design students empower themselves with in this area?

Onshi. Learning to design software during college time is the most important thing I would recommend. When a designer is skilled with designing skills, he /she will get a decent job but if one is skilled with 3D modelling along with planning and designing skills, that functions as a plus point and results in an outstanding position at a reputed firm.

Careers360. What are the latest trends in the design world and how can students understand them to choose the best career path?

Onshi. The latest trends in the design world include sleek design items with a modern look. As I have mentioned I am in Commercial design so just for example, an office reception area is a space where there is a reception table and a 3–4-person seating area but the way we can make it better is by adding some ceiling design like cell ceiling or baffle ceiling. On the wall, we can add an office branding video wall that makes the area more interesting.

While choosing the best career path, I would only recommend one single factor which is your interest. If you are interested in what you are going for, you will give your best efforts and have success. This is my experience.
