The National Testing Agency (NTA) announces the result in the form of NIFT CMR ranks. Candidates may wonder what is the difference between NIFT 2026 CMR and AIR in the NIFT 2026 result. The difference between AIR and CMR in the NIFT entrance exam lies in the terminology and not so much in the meaning. In this article, let’s try to understand the NIFT 2026 CMR Vs AIR comparison and how it can help candidates.
The NTA declares the NIFT final result in terms of CMR ranks or the Common Merit Rank. In other entrance exams, the usual term used is AIR or the All India Rank. In this section, find out what NIFT CMR is and its importance in the NIFT counselling and admission process. The NIFT cutoff is also released in the form of opening and closing CMR ranks of candidates.
Particulars | NIFT CMR | AIR | Category Merit Rank |
Meaning | Rank within all the candidates who appeared in the exam | Rank within all the candidates who appeared in the exam | Rank within all the candidates from a particular category who appeared in the exam |
Used in | NIFT entrance exam | A majority of entrance exams | Used in exams such as NIFT, UCEED etc |
The NIFT CMR refers to the Common Merit Rank. It is the candidate’s rank among all the candidates who appeared in the exam. The rank is assigned based on the candidate’s score in all components of NIFT 2026 as per the applicable programme and completely excluding the category. The NIFT Common Merit Rank is assigned irrespective of the category and based only on the scores. In that way, NIFT CMR is similar to All India Rank. The AIR commonly refers to the candidate’s rank among all the candidates who appeared for the exam.
However, candidates must also take note of another terminology, which is the NIFT Category Merit Rank. In the NIFT entrance exam, the category merit rank refers to the candidate’s rank within the category to which he or she belongs. So, while a candidate may have a category merit rank of one, the same candidate need not necessarily have a Common Merit Rank of 1.
