One of the most common questions that is asked by non drawing background students in their NID preparation journey is “ Can a non drawing student clear the NID DAT exam?”. The answer is yes, students even from non-drawing backgrounds are able to crack the NID DAT Exam as NID examiners do not focus on the quality or how well the student can sketch beautiful drawings but assess a student's creativity, observation skills, problem-solving ability, design thinking, and visual communication. Therefore, students are advised to focus more on their design thinking and innovation abilities rather than worrying on drawing and sketching skills. Experts have curated this article for non-drawing students to get an understanding of what is focussed in the NID DAT exam and get important tips and strategies to score well in NID 2027.
It is one of the most important pieces of advice for students to first go through and completely understand the NID 2027 Exam Syllabus and NID DAT Exam Pattern for the drawing section to understand what is actually expected of students.
The NID 2026 question paper was observed to include only Part-B questions based on creativity and design thinking but no Part-A questions. Drawing and design thinking skills were focused in each question. We are not sure that there won’t be any Part-A-based questions in the NID 2027 Exam, as NID is famous for its experimental format and unpredictable nature. As a result, it is advised to prepare for both Part-A and part-B of the NID exam while keeping drawing and design aptitude as the primary focus.
NOTE: As per the revised selection process and NID DAT 2027 Exam Pattern , the NID DAT prelims result will not have any weightage in the final selection of candidates for BDes and MDes programs. NID Mains exam will have 60% weightage for the NID studio test and 40% weightage for an in-person interview for NID BDes selection.

Given below are some common challenges faced by students from non drawing backgrounds while preparing for the NID DAT exam:
Slow Sketching and Drawing Speed
Students from non drawing backgrounds usually have limited drawing experience and may take longer to complete sketches. As NID is a timed exam and requires students to finish their solutions in a given time frame, this could be a challenge for non drawing students.
Difficulty in Sketching Human Figures
Non-drawing students preparing for the NID exam sometimes do feel sketching or drawing human figures is very difficult for them as it usually requires a lot of practice over time to achieve the accuracy.
Difficulty in Perspective Drawings
Perspective drawings need a deep sense of scale, proportion, depth and distance and therefore it becomes difficult to master them in a few days. Non drawing students usually do not have a lot of experience in perspective drawing and therefore may find them as a challenge in NID exam preparation.
Lack in Confidence
Due to the popular myth that the NID exam needs students to be expert in drawing and sketching, non- drawing students may lack confidence that they can achieve high scores in the NID 2027 exam.
The most common drawing questions that can be asked in the NID 2027 exam and needed to be mastered by the students to crack the exam are given below:
Perspective Drawing - It is important to first learn and understand one-point, two-point, and three-point perspectives before jumping on to complex sketches. Practice sketching everyday objects from various viewpoints to improve the observation skills.
Product Design - Since many of the NID exam's questions focus on product or object design, students should focus on creating original, innovative and practical product design. It is very important to visually represent your product design in correct and appealing ways.
Freehand Sketching - The NID DAT exam does not allow students to use rulers or any other drawing tools, therefore drawing without the aid of rulers or compasses can be intimidating for students in the exam. To overcome this students should practice drawing freehand sketches and work on their line and weight control.
StoryBoarding - The NID DAT exam includes a lot of questions where students' ability to visually depict a series of events is assessed. It evaluates a candidate's ability to convey a narrative, idea, or sequence. Questions are asked to create a storyboard for a simple narrative, such as depicting the steps of an action or event.
