For NMIMS DAT Preparation 2026, students should create and understand the NMIMS DAT 2026 Syllabus for the Part A and Part B of the exam and then prepare the study strategy accordingly. Students can create timetables according to the topics which are more or less difficult to them and then assign time for them respectively. It is advised that students should take up at least one difficult and one easier topic daily in their study routine.
Different strategies work for different students and therefore, aspiring students should come up with strategies that will cater to them personally and help with better exam preparation. Some of the tips that can help students are:
Students can create their own timetable according to their weaknesses and strengths by assigning more time to the weak topics and daily practice topics. This not only helps them but will also create a sense of confidence and better time management.
Students should break their preparation into manageable chunks. For example, allocate specific time blocks for practicing sketching, logical reasoning, and reading for environmental awareness.
Read a lot of articles and books related to specific topics to gather a larger spectrum of knowledge.
Solve as many previous year question papers as possible as it would provide a better insight on the examination.
Try to solve mock test papers daily as part of your revision as it not only provides students with better preparation but also helps in building confidence and understanding of what questions take what amount of time for them to solve. Many design-specific platforms like YouTube and design blogs offer free tutorials to improve visualization skills, drawing, and conceptual thinking.
Students should understand and consistency is the most important key here, and only through consistency and discipline they would be able to crack competitive exams.
Visualization is thinking, listening, interpreting the idea in our minds and then putting it out on paper altogether. Spatial ability can also be termed as spatial intelligence is the ability of designers that allows them to visualize a 2-D shape and understand how it will appear in a 3-D state, their transformation and/ or manipulation of 2d shapes and 3d objects. Therefore, students need to practice daily and solve as many questions to be fluent with the skills for preparation for Visual & Spatial Ability.
Topics that are usually asked in the Observation & Memory include: Pattern Recognition- Transformation, Arrangements, Alignments & Orientation, Understanding of Composition, Understanding of Basic Design Principles and Geometric Shapes and Fundamentals of Geometry. Students need to work on their skills and practice these topics on a regular basis.
This section involves questions that examine a candidate's understanding of environmental issues, social problems, sustainability, and how they can come up with creative solutions to solve them relevant to design. Preparing for Environmental and Social awareness involves reading and following news on a daily basis and reflecting on how design can contribute to positive changes.
Logical reasoning refers to the ability of students to systematically thinking and solving problems, make decisions and then come up with effective conclusions. This also includes Verbal reasoning which is the ability for students to understand, interpret, and logically analyze written information.
Problem Solving & Sketching of the Concept Creative Thinking- This section involves questions that examine students' creative thinking ability to come up with innovative ideas and solutions in sketch format. Students should be smart about the questions and create designs which offer the best solution for the given questions. Focus on core design principles like balance, contrast, emphasis, proportion as part of preparing for design challenges.
To prepare for the section students need to establish a Daily Drawing Routine and do warm-up exercises. Students need to focus on Fundamental Skills like practicing drawing basic shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders) from different angles and work on accurate proportions by measuring and comparing sizes in your subjects.

For portfolio preparation, students should properly first read the instructions given to them for size and number of sheets asked by the examiners. After this step, students should select the given number of their best suitable projects they have worked upon in their previous years which actively align to the applied course. Portfolios should be visually pleasing including proper formatting and color pallets for the portfolio (it is usually advised to keep one color pallet throughout the portfolio) while conveying enough information on the projects for the examiner to understand. Understanding how to make a portfolio that effectively showcases your work is essential, as it will help you present your creative journey in the best possible way for NMIMS DAT 2026 and other design colleges.
For interview rounds, students should be relaxed and formal with explaining their backgrounds and experiences to the interviewers. Students should speak clearly and try to be raw and impressive at the same time while showcasing the characteristics that can make them stand out. Students should be able to clearly convey why they see themselves as ideal candidates and how their goals align with the courses they are applying for. Confidence is the key here, interviewers usually are more interested in the personalities of the candidates and how well they are presented. Students should also remember that they should not appear as overconfident or arrogant in front of the interviewers. Understanding how to prepare for the interview requires a combination of practice and self-awareness, ensuring that you present your strengths effectively without being overly assertive.
