For NMIMS DAT exam preparation, it is important for all the aspiring students to first go through the application process and eligibility criteria actively. Before applying for the NMIMS DAT entrance exam, it is important to understand the NMIMS DAT 2025 exam pattern of the examination for both Part A and Part B of the exam. Visual & Spatial Ability - Visualization is thinking, listening, interpreting the idea in our minds and then putting it out on paper altogether. Spatial ability can also be termed as spatial intelligence is the ability of designers that allows them to visualize a 2-D shape and understand how it will appear in a 3-D state, their transformation and/ or manipulation of 2d shapes and 3d objects. Therefore, students need to practice daily and solve as many questions to be fluent with the skills for preparation for Visual & Spatial Ability.
Observation & Memory- Topics that are usually asked in the Observation & Memory include: Pattern Recognition- Transformation, Arrangements, Alignments & Orientation, Understanding of Composition, Understanding of Basic Design Principles and Geometric Shapes and Fundamentals of Geometry. Students need to work on their skills and practice these topics on a regular basis.
Environmental and Social awareness- This section involves questions that examine a candidate's understanding of environmental issues, social problems, sustainability, and how they can come up with creative solutions to solve them relevant to design. Preparing for Environmental and Social awareness involves reading and following news on a daily basis and reflecting on how design can contribute to positive changes.
Logical Reasoning- Logical reasoning refers to the ability of students to systematically thinking and solving problems, make decisions and then come up with effective conclusions. This also includes Verbal reasoning which is the ability for students to understand, interpret, and logically analyze written information.
Design Challenge: Problem Solving & Sketching of the Concept Creative Thinking- This section involves questions that examine students' creative thinking ability to come up with innovative ideas and solutions in sketch format. Students should be smart about the questions and create designs which offer the best solution for the given questions.
Representation of the concept and The uniqueness of the solution- To prepare for the section students need to establish a Daily Drawing Routine and do warm-up exercises. Students need to focus on Fundamental Skills like practicing drawing basic shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders) from different angles and work on accurate proportions by measuring and comparing sizes in your subjects.
For portfolio preparation, students should properly first read the instructions given to them for size and number of sheets asked by the examiners. After this step, students should select the given number of their best suitable projects they have worked upon in their previous years which actively align to the applied course. Portfolios should be visually pleasing including proper formatting and color pallets for the portfolio (it is usually advised to keep one color pallet throughout the portfolio) while conveying enough information on the projects for the examiner to understand.
For interview rounds, students should be relaxed and formal with explaining their backgrounds and experiences to the interviewers. Students should speak clearly and try to be raw and impressive at the same time while showcasing the characteristics that can make them stand out. Students should be able to clearly convey why they see themselves as ideal candidates and how their goals align with the courses they are applying for. Confidence is the key here, interviewers usually are more interested in the personalities of the candidates and how well they are presented. Students should also remember that they should not appear as overconfident or arrogant in front of the interviewers.
Candidates should go through the exam pattern for NMIMS DAT to familiarize better with the format of the exam and build confidence prior to the preparation. Students should understand the type of questions that are asked in the exam. As per NMIMS DAT exam pattern, the studio test consists of two parts - Part A and Part B. The studio test Part A format of the question is MCQ.
Note: Candidates who have appeared and cleared the UCEED Exam and have a valid UCEED score card by the registration end date, will be exempted (excused) to appear for the Studio test conducted by NMIMS. However, such candidates will have to submit the portfolio and appear for Personal interview as per important dates.
