Aspirants preparing for NID 2027 and confused about where to start? So this is the article for you. Because NID is less about memorising topics and more about testing your ability to observe, understand problems, think creatively, and communicate ideas visually. Since the exam is time-bound, sketching skills alone are not enough. Since the NID 2027 exam does not follow a fixed syllabus, it has become important for the aspirants to identify the repeated pattern from the NID previous years' papers. The article highlights the important topics that are repeated or whose importance has increased over the years so that students can focus their efforts particularly on those topics for NID DAT 2027 preparation

Major Shift in NID 2027 Exam - Key Trends Observed

From the analysis of the nature of questions as asked from 2021 to 2025, it is evident that the rise in subjective, design-led questions is taking over. It was seen in the NID 2026 question paper that it did not have any Part-A section and questions were only based on creative ability. All the questions were based on drawing and design thinking aptitude.
Aptitude is being evaluated in design questions like storytelling tests, perspective reflection tests, product problem-solving approaches, etc., where user-centric problems are being evaluated.

Detailed Analysis of Topics that Gained Weightage in NID 2027 Exam

As per the revised selection process and NID DAT Exam Pattern , the NID DAT prelims result will not have any weightage in the final selection of candidates for B.Des and M.Des programmes. NID Mains exam will have 60% weightage for studio test and 40% weightage for the in-person interview for NID B.Des selection.

It is also important for students to understand NID Exam Syllabus before starting with the preparations. There is a strong shift in the intention of the question, from designing the objects to designing for the user and context:

    1. Shifting weightage to User-Centric Design

    2. Functional Problem-Solving

    3. Storytelling is a high-weighted section

    4. Process Visualisation

    5. Applied Social and Environmental Awareness

We would be taking one by one the major shift in the pattern in detail with relevant examples for better understanding.

There is a shift for designing not the beautiful objects with high rendering but, more user centric design and the context in application formats. Recently question have been focussing on the “Human-Centric Problem Solving” as :

    1. Designing a water tap for a child, artist and a usually impaired user.

    2. A 20-litre water carrier for mountain regions

    3. Bus seats encourage child-safety as a design challenge.

All the above questions point to the weightage of User-centric questions. Let’s break the question as per practical obligations need to be mended.

    User

    Challenge to Cater

    Design-Intervention Possible

    Child

Cannot reach the handle or tap faucet

Lower or extendable controls for water flow

    People Living in Hilly terrains

Have to carry water far distance which is tidy process

Rolling Solution for carrying water effortlessly to large distances

Children with not fully developed muscles

Keeping children safe and intact in seat for any road condition from jerk to ergonomics of seat

Modular seats to accommodate students of all shape and size

    1. Functional Problem-Solving

Ideas that sound and look practical are awarded in the NID, for example consider the design brief “ A 20-litre water carrier for mountain regions”, should have following attributes looking the utility and design requirements:

    • Should be light weight and compact

    • One-hand operation with control

    • Controlled Flow and comfortable drinking

    • Easy of carrying, assembling and dismantling

    1. Storytelling is a high-weighted section

Overall this skill has gained traction over the year from industry to academia, and being asked in the NID-DAT exams with “Real-Time Scenarios", in following formats:

    A. Completing a story in 3-4 frames(sometime keywords given)

    B. Using Given object/Keyword in the narrative

    C. Depicting the Smooth transitions for key movements

    D. Illustrating any conflict, humour or emotional change in frames

So, what is a reliable 03 frame format to use in the exam?

Set the Situation - > Show the change - >Reveal the consequence

So for a powerful story narration it is not required to overcrowd the frame but selectively moving the story forward

    1. Process Visualisation

Your ability to recall the details of the everyday happening in the format of structured “Process-visualisation”, like making tea, candles from bee-wax etc. are asked in the NID for testing your creativity to enforce meaningful transformations. The basis structure of such questions is as follows:

    Object → Action → Tool → Transformation → Outcome

The process visualisation based questions test your observation, Sequencing and “Economy of Communication”.

Process Flow (03 Frames) : Pickle Making from raw ingredients

    1. Applied Social and Environmental Awareness

Over the time the section of “General awareness” is being increasingly tested thur situation based recalling , in spite of direct questions. Questions have been focussed on awareness through visuals like posters, banners etc. based on socially sensitive topics like bullying, littering, Plastic-Waste, child safety and Solar Energy etc.

Where to make the justification with the topic you should be aware of the numbers, recent happenings and changes in policies etc, to effectively communicate your awareness of surroundings.

NID DAT Previous Year Question Papers : Students can start by looking at previous year questions to understand the type of questions that are generally asked in NID DAT Exam.

NID Sample Papers and NID Mock Tests: Students can solve as many sample questions and mock tests as they can to develop a sense of the kind of questions asked and also develop a sense of confidence in them for the actual exam day.

    Students should also check:

Which Topics are Losing Weightages in NID DAT Exam 2027

The following discussed areas are seemingly losing weightage with the new assessment scheme:

    1. Cramming-based static general knowledge: Losing charm, but still useful as a subject for awareness of surroundings.

    2. Direct Quantitative Aptitude-based questions: No such questions seen in previous years' papers

    3. Memorised Fixed Ideas: This is being replaced with real-time challenges where the memorised context may not work.

Note: This does not mean that aspirants should ignore the General

Awareness, good sketching skills, and Reading and Gathering the relevant data, however, developing a more holistic and empathetic approach would help you evolve better as a candidate.

    1. You have to be vigilant to the real situation, human responses and the limitations of a system overall.

    2. Identify the stakeholders and user of the given object, product or service and mark behavioralural patterns that may become solutions.

    3. Diversity in Ideas: Try to solve or overcome a situation in n-way both traditional or not so conventional.

    4. Selection and Rejection of Ideas : You have to develop a matrix-based approach for selection and rejection of the ideas.

    Conclusion

NID has been experimental in the approach of selection of the right candidates in recent year. There is no fixed syllabus that you can lean upon, but definitely the themes like USer centric ensign, Problem-Solving, Functional-Ideation, Contextual Awareness and Clear communication abilities as the themes more than topics evolving as the rationale for selection of a deserving candidate.
