Every year, thousands of aspiring students prepare and give the UCEED exam to get admitted into design courses offered in IITs and other prestigious colleges that consider UCEED scores. Hence, UCEED is one of the most important design entrance exams in India. The UCEED exam has two papers: Part-A and Part-B where Part-B of the exam examines students on sketching/drawing, creative and design thinking skills. Therefore, students need to understand and prepare effectively for the sketching questions. Many students have this doubt of which sketching style (digital or traditional) needs to be focused on because of the growing trend for digital sketching tools. Read this article carefully and understand Tradition vs Digital: which sketching style needs to be focussed for the UCEED 2027 exam.

According to the UCEED 2027 exam pattern, Part B of the exam consists of 100 marks and the time allotted is 60 minutes with 2 sketching questions of 50 marks for each. This section has been added to UCEED entrance exam in recent years to test aspirants’ sketching and visualization abilities and is hence very important. It is important to remember that Part-B of the UCEED exam is evaluated for students only after they have cleared Part-A of the UCEED question paper.
Part-B is a scoring section for students that include questions related to the topics as per the UCEED 2027 syllabus :
Visualization ability
Creativity and imagination
Observation skills
Perspective understanding
Communication of ideas
Design thinking

Students must prepare for Part B of the UCEED exam in order to get admitted, as it has a substantial impact on the exam's final score. Drawing, or Part-B, can be a game-changer for students because, similar to Part A of the UCEED exam, there is no right answer; instead, it is subjective, giving students an equal opportunity to demonstrate their creative and design abilities.

But before we get to the question of what to focus on for UCEED preparation - Digital sketching or Traditional sketching, it is important to understand what both of these styles mean.
Traditional sketching refers to creating drawings and sketches using physical tools like pencils, pens, erasers, markers etc on paper sheet or some medium. Traditional sketching style is the conventional sketching method used by artists and designers for years.
Digital sketching refers to art and sketches made by using electronic devices such as tablets, E-pens etc using different graphical softwares. This method is relatively new and requires devices to create sketches.
Given below are some important differences between traditional and digital sketching styles to help students understand them more in depth for UCEED 2027 exam:
Traditional Sketching style provides better motor control with better line quality and hand-eye coordination where digital sketching style provides very limited motor control as it only uses stylus for all the drawings.
Understanding of different art mediums can be achieved in traditional sketching style but with digital sketching different mediums are created by a single digital device therefore limiting real life knowledge of the materials.
Traditional sketching style is generally time consuming with re-drawing and corrections taking a lot of time from the artist but in digital sketching style, time consumed is limited due to advanced features.
Digital Sketching provides cleaner sketches with larger color rendering options whereas Traditional sketching requires years of practice and a lot of time to achieve the same clean sketch with limited rendering options.

Given below are some crucial points to help students understand whether to focus on the traditional sketching or digital sketching for the UCEED 2027 exam:
Since the UCEED 2027 exam is a paper based exam and does not allow students to use digital medium, it is important for students to practice traditional sketching style to familiarize themselves with the actual exam conditions.
As the UCEED exam is a time consuming exam with limited time to complete solutions, students are advised to focus more on traditional sketching as it will prepare you for the speed in the actual exam. Students are advised to practice with UCEED previous year’s drawing questions.
Once students have a hang on traditional sketching practices with speed and accuracy, students can use digital sketching styles for quicker ideation and concept sketches to practice for innovative solutions and design thinking ability.
Practice with UCEED previous year questions and take regular UCEED mock tests and UCEED sample Papers to familiarize themselves with UCEED exam language and understand what is expected of students in the exam. This will help students understand what sketching style works best for them during preparation.
Incorporating daily sketches with traditional sketching methods is very important for students because switching from digital sketching to traditional practice can be time taking for students and therefore can cause panic among them.
Refer to the table below to get an overview of which style traditional or digital sketching needs more focus from students preparing for UCEED 2027 exam:
Factor | Traditional Sketching | Digital Sketching |
UCEED Exam Environment | Same setting as of the UCEED exam environment | Is not yet allowed in the UCEED exam |
Speed and Accuracy | Prepares for better speed and accuracy for the UCEED exam | Speed and accuracy can be hampered in the actual UCEED exam environment |
Motor Control | Better motor controls | Limited motor controls |
Concept and Ideation | Limited experiments can be done due to limitations and time consuming activities | Helps in fast ideation and concept sketches with wide range of features |
