UCEED Exam Date:18 Jan' 26 - 18 Jan' 26
For aspiring designers the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is a crucial step towards a career in design through the reputed IIT-B or affiliated top private colleges of India. While Part-A tests your analytical and general aptitude, Part-B is where your visual communication skills are put to a litmus test. UCEED Entrance Exam Part B a subjective drawing test, demanding not just the aesthetics but strategic thinking and ability for good visual communication. Through this article we will be sharing with you the experiences of the UCEED 2026 Topper and mentors who have been in this practice for the last 07 years.
UCEED Part-B evaluates you on the basis of open-ended questions that require you to visualize, conceptualize, and communicate solutions through drawing in the exam hall. UCEED Exam 2026 Syllabus for this section aims to understand the student’s sketching capabilities and understanding of perspective, object drawing, speed sketching, etc. It's not merely about creating beautiful sketches, rather it's a reflection exercise for your design aptitude, problem-solving abilities, and clarity of thought where it dwells for the following :
Clarity of Ideas: Can you effectively convey your conceptual thinking through sketches?
Problem-solving Approach: Do your sketches show a thoughtful solution achieved through a due process?
Visual Communication Skills: Do you have a sound understanding of lines, forms, and composition?
Originality and Creativity: Do you bring a fresh perspective to the problem?
Going through UCEED Previous Year Question Papers will help understand question paper patterns better.
Note: Whatever we are covering in this article is based on the opinions of mentors, coaches, and UCEED 2023 Ranker (AIR 19).
Now let’s break down the specific techniques and strategies adopted by UCEED toppers, who have secured ranks in UCEED Examination in past years. Students can pick the best UCEED study material, which will aid them in following and being consistent with a strategy.
Perspective drawing is the art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface, creating an illusion of depth and space.
Toppers Insight | Why it Matters for Part B | Activity For Perspective |
“My focus was always to make sure that objects looked solid, and real in the space provided. Practising geometric shapes like cubes, cylinders from different view-angles, and then applying in more complex form helped me understand the Perspective Drawing” UCEED AIR -19 (2023) | Many questions involve drawing products, environments and scenes, where the accurate understanding of perspective ensure the outputs “Close to reality of a 2D medium like paper” Note: A wrong perspective or wobbly drawing can undermine your best idea. | Take a common household object, like a book, mug and shoe. Try to draw it from three different view points and eye-levels. Focus on accurately depicting converging lines and how the object recedes into the space. |
Proportion refers to the relative size of parts within an object or the environment, while scale relatively looks the size of an object to a standard reference (like a human figure). Toppers emphasize that understanding these concepts is vital for creating believable and functional designs.
Toppers Insight | Why it Matters for Part B | Activity For Perspective |
“ I always included the human figures or a familiar object next to my proposed solution to give a fair sense of scale. It makes the design relatable and helps the viewer to contextually co-relate the sizes. UCEED AIR -19 (2023) | If you are thinking of a solution in the form of a product, its relative size to a user is critical. Note: Incorrect Proportions can make a design look useful or impractical. | Practise drawing the human figures for understanding of scale and functionality. E.g. For an outdoor environment practise a human sitting on a bench or using a product. |
Line quality refers to the thickness, darkness, and texture of your lines and width of the line strokes in linear manner. Line control is your ability to draw these lines with precision and confidence.
Toppers Insight | Why it Matters for Part-B | Activity For Perspective |
“One Should not be afraid to commit mistakes initially, and use the different line weights from the very first day of practice to adopt this in your muscle memory, without worrying about straightness of lines initially…Just Begin !” UCEED AIR -19 (2023) | Good Line quality conveys clarity in your thoughts, form, texture and emphasis on good outcome, without including too much shading or additional details to reach the fineness. Note: Hesitant or hairy lines can reflect the amateurish in practise. | Practise drawing simple daily objects using the line only. E.g. Try to draw kitchen items like appliances, utensils and tools with lines but varying stroke width. Focus on continuity and quality of lines. |
Composition is the arrangement of elements within a given space. A good composition guides the viewer's eye, guiding through a visual balance, and clearly communicates the intent of your sketch.
Toppers Insight | Why it Matters for Part-B | Activity For Perspective |
‘Before I even start drawing, I always do a tiny thumbnail of the sketch to figure out the best suited angle and arrangement for my idea. It saves a lot of time and makes the final output much more crisp’ UCEED AIR -19 (2023) | A well composed sketch is visually appealing and effectively communicates your design intent, showing your thought process regarding your idea and how it will be perceived. | In a market place of your locality, think of redesigning the space and create quick 3-5 thumbnail sketches exploring the different compositional layout. Consider the foreground, middle ground and background in your composition. |
*Let’s try to understand the power of quick-composition of objects from different view angles to reach the most optimal compositional view angle.
Good performance in any exam is not a subject specific evaluation, for your personality. In the context of design this isa blend of technical drawing skills, creative thinking and effective visual communication. By focussing on foundational techniques as discussed above and practising the suggested activities you can easily build a robust visual vocabulary. More importantly the tips from the rankers would help you understand the success mantras for prompt understanding, rapid ideation and visual storytelling and disciplined time management.
Remember practice is the key !

Hello!
UCEED is a competitive exam for design aspirants, testing design aptitude, logical thinking, creativity, and visualisation skills. To improve your score out of 300, start by understanding the exam pattern—Part A (objective) and Part B (subjective). For Part A, practice reasoning, numerical aptitude, and environmental & social awareness questions. For Part B, focus on drawing, sketching, and presenting your ideas clearly. Solve past year UCEED papers and join online mock test series. Spend at least 2–3 hours daily practising creative problem-solving and sketching. Also, work on time management because the exam requires quick thinking.
