UCEED Exam Date:18 Jan' 26 - 18 Jan' 26
Hello students, the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design, or UCEED, is one of the most difficult and prestigious design entrance exams in India. To succeed, students must study and get the proper guidance and preparation tips. To pass the UCEED exam, students must do extraordinarily well in the Sketching and Drawing component (Part-B). This article is designed to help students with the ten most common UCEED exam drawing tasks and provide with practice exercises and strategic approach for UCEED 2026.

The UCEED 2026 exam pattern has been divided into two parts A and B with Paper-B containing drawing and sketching questions with 50 marks for each. According to the UCEED Syllabus 2026, UCEED entrance exam will have questions on the following topics:
Drawing: Ability to draw products, people, or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.
Design Aptitude: Capability to practically and appropriately respond to problems/situations with ingenuity and empathy.
The most common drawing tasks that can be asked in the UCEED exam and needed to be mastered by the students to crack the exam are given below:
It is important to first learn and understand one-point, two-point, and three-point perspectives before jumping on to complex sketches. Start practicing with simple objects like cubes, spheres and cylinders, etc and draw them from different angles. Practice sketching everyday objects from various viewpoints to improve the observation skills. Understanding of basic Proportions & Scaling is very important for perspective drawing. Focus on how objects reduce in size as they move further away. Students can go through some UCEED previous year questions to understand the type of questions asked in the exam.
Figure Drawing related questions in UCEED tests student’s ability to draw human figures accurately and how correctly students focus on proportions, anatomy, and gestures. Students are advised to practice with stick figures and action lines first to understand figure compositions. Candidates can start with basic human and animal anatomy and practice sketching figures in different poses. Take references from images or live figures to improve accuracy.
UCEED often includes questions where students are asked to draw objects in a composition, combining different items together to create a visual composition and design. It is very important for object drawing questions that students focus on correct proportions and scale of different objects together. Practice with sketching basic objects like fruits, stationary items, or everyday objects, and experiment with different compositions. Focus on balancing the size, placement, and perspective.

Since many of the UCEED exam's questions focus on product or object design, students should focus on creating original, innovative and practical product design. It is very important to visually represent your product design in correct and appealing ways. Therefore, it is advised for aspiring students to practice coming up with new designs for already existing products and practice sketching them with different views to represent accurately how they work. Here are some UCEED previous year’s drawing questions with an approach on how to solve UCEED part-B questions.
The UCEED exam does not allow students to use rulers or any other drawing tools, therefore drawing without the aid of rulers or compasses can be intimidating for students in the exam. To overcome this students should practice drawing freehand sketches and work on their line and weight control. Use objects like trees, flowers, and clouds to practice creating natural, flowing lines.
Metamorphosis refers to the process of transformation or change of one shape to another. Students may be asked to transform an object in the UCEED exam (e.g., turning a simple cube into a functional object). Begin with simple objects and experiment with altering their shapes. For example, transform a cube into a chair or a cylinder into a cup.
Drawing natural landscapes or objects can be asked in the UCEED exam to test student’s observational and design sensibilities. Here it is important for students to understand and develop keen observational skills for natural landscapes around them. Practice with the proportions and textures of natural objects. Use real-life references and practice sketches, focusing on details like leaves, trees, water bodies etc.
The UCEED exam includes a lot of questions where students' ability to visually depict a series of events is assessed. It evaluates a candidate's ability to convey a narrative, idea, or sequence. Questions are asked to create a storyboard for a simple narrative, such as depicting the steps of an action or event. Students are advised to practice with creating step-wise sketches for basic activities like making tea etc. This will give students a clear idea of how many steps and sketches are needed to show any event and boost confidence for the actual exam.
Students can also be asked to create 3D shapes from basic cube, cone to more complex 3d shapes like sphere with accurate shading and textures in the UCEED exam. Therefore, students are advised to practice with basic 2d shapes and then converting them into their 3d forms with learning shading techniques like pencil shading, line shading, hatching etc, to give these shapes depth.
Drawing a concept or idea, often with the objective of visualizing a product, space, or scenes are asked by the students in the UCEED exam. Practice with creating visual representations of abstract ideas and shapes to represent a concept. Start with brainstorming ideas and sketching roughly before refining them into detailed concepts. Students can solve as many UCEED sample questions and mock tests as that will help them to understand the kind of questions asked in the UCEED exam.

A six-year old girl is going to school for the first time. She needs to carry a lunch box in her school bag. Her lunch can contain typical Indian food items (both dry as well as liquid food items, such as Roti, Rice, Dosa, Dal, Sambar, etc.). Design a lunch box for her, considering her needs. Sketch your design, and visually explain the features of your design along with clear labels.

Hello!
UCEED is a competitive exam for design aspirants, testing design aptitude, logical thinking, creativity, and visualisation skills. To improve your score out of 300, start by understanding the exam pattern—Part A (objective) and Part B (subjective). For Part A, practice reasoning, numerical aptitude, and environmental & social awareness questions. For Part B, focus on drawing, sketching, and presenting your ideas clearly. Solve past year UCEED papers and join online mock test series. Spend at least 2–3 hours daily practising creative problem-solving and sketching. Also, work on time management because the exam requires quick thinking.
