The purpose of the NIFT CAT 2025 (Creative Ability Test) is to evaluate candidates' creativity. This section in the NIFT Entrance exam is used to evaluate a candidate's capacity for intuition, observational skills, inventiveness in concept formulation, and design acumen. The test's unique and inventive use of color and drawing techniques is a significant component.
This test has no set topic, although possible topics include color theory, perspective, motifs & patterns, drawing, design, and more.
A jury can more accurately assess an applicant's creative drawing and design skills by using the Creative Ability Test. This portion has been given the highest weightage of the entire exam sections for both the BDes and MDes programs, and it comes without negative mark.
Due to its subjective nature, this portion allows applicants ample opportunity to demonstrate their talents in design and artistic expression. Students need to understand that at the entrance level, it is quite competitive, but also quite restricted with constraints and the type of specified questions asked in the section.
Aspiring candidates must take advantage of this chance and showcase their creative knowledge, which is a more sustained way to judge a student’s capability like GK and other Important Topics for NIFT Preparation.
The NIFT CAT exam pattern is structured as such, with CAT BDes given a 50% weightage and CAT MDes are given a 40% weightage, making the CAT for both exams the highest weighted section.

The NIFT CAT syllabus offers a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of the CAT Exam.
It is crucial to understand the syllabus as it forms the basis for a strategy on how to prepare for NIFT 2025. Here is a brief overview of the NIFT CAT Syllabus:
Observation Ability: Patterns, Rearrangement, Spontaneous sketching
Sketching Ability: Variety - Anatomy, product sketching, Nature, Perspective, Mascot/ Logo making, Poster making, Comic strips, etc.
Design Ability and Aptitude
Creativity and Practicality
Colour Use and Visuality
Creative Tidiness: It is important to note that none of the sketching tests want to see how neat or clean your lines can be, but it becomes important to make your sketches appear visually quite pleasing. Unlike an in-person studio experience, sketching becomes your key tool of expression and it must hence be self-explanatory.
Additional Syllabus for NIFT CAT MDes - Students can go through Important Topics for NIFT Preparation to get a wider understanding of the type of topics in focus.
Students preparing for the NIFT 2025 need to prepare for the NIFT-CAT section thoroughly since forms the section with the highest weightage and importance. A student’s design intentions become clear here and is what separates art from design. The students’ performance here gives a clear picture of how well they can communicate and ideate their ideas. Pure design ability is given full focus, and unlike GAT, this section does not test a student’s objective knowledge.
These are some crucial pointers to remember when prepping for the NIFT CAT exam.
Frequent Sketching Practice: Many students find this to be a challenging procedure when they are first preparing as they focus mainly on GAT alone. This particular ability is multifaceted and goes beyond simple "drawing"; it demands a high level of muscle recall, so it needs to be started as soon as possible.
Recognizing classification in sketching: Different forms of sketching have different applications and techniques. For a comic strip, one cannot, for example, draw fully anatomical illustrations. The characters must be portrayed less realistically and with greater drama.
Thumbnail sketching: A thumbnail sketch, with a given brief or drawing question, is a miniature rough sketch to plot out the proportions and necessary color pallets. This will help students check if they are visualizing the question correctly before drawing it in actual scale.
Line hygiene: It is advisable to not use rules or scales to avoid making the sketches look artificial and aided. It can be used for perspective sketching and product sketching, and sometimes to draw important boundaries and margins. Students must refrain from depending on a scale/ ruler for the other types of sketching.
Starting with the weaknesses: As mentioned above, sketching requires multiple attempts and long hours of practice. This is especially true for sketchings which require full free-hand drawing, without any aid. This can be true for comic strips, anatomical, and nature drawings- mostly organic forms. It is advisable to view the objects around as a combination of simpler 2D and 3D shapes to simplify it for sketching. Use the best books for NIFT preparation for some helpful books on sketching.
Use of drawing materials: Although this is a pointer of little importance, it would help if students could learn to draw, only using a fixed set of pens and pencils. One black fine-marker pen and an HB pencil from any brand would do. Students can choose any combination of brands that they are comfortable with. How this helps, is, that it provides students with a type of material confidence while sketching, thus giving them a better grip and idea about where their hand might go while sketching.
Writing for MDes CAT: PG Students can practice writing short stories, vignettes, fast-fiction, etc other types of creative writing. They can give themselves realistic stories to write on and be up to date with the current GK and trends across the world. A common example question was about how, due to the concept of Live-in and couples not wanting to have children in the coming years, the number of senior citizens in the country will increase. Students were asked to write about a day in the life of such an old citizen.
Also Check:
When it comes to attempting the CAT section, note that a student is given 3 hours to complete it. Time management in attempting this can be tricky and subjective, differing from student to student. Here is one of the more reliable strategies one can refer to:
It is the most common thought to split the given 3 hours into 1 hour per question, but this can lead to a student spending more than an hour on the same question trying to perfect it, without an idea or thumbnail plan for the next.
This indicates that once the exam commences, students can divide their time as such:
Total time given | 180 minutes |
Thumbnail and sketch plans for all questions | 45 minutes (15 per question) |
Final sketches and annotation + concept writing | 135 minutes (45 minutes per question) |
The NIFT CAT Exam has undergone multiple changes over the past few years. The sketching questions have evolved from topics like drawing from imagination, comic strip making, innovative product design, etc to more practical applications of perspective drawing like environment and problem-solving abilities and 3D Visualization. Although the context of the questions changes constantly, the underlying concepts like perspective sketching, product sketching, anatomy, etc remain foundational.
PG students find that the CAT exam is slightly more challenging and technical. It involves the understanding of current culture and trends, visualization and design analysis for the same, redesigning existing systems, etc, under a more serious tone.
